Bom Dia, Brasil!

First of all, I want to say thank you to everyone who has supported me and been praying for me concerning my excursion to to Brazil. God has truly blessed each detail of my trip. From packing, to flying, to extensive overnight layovers in the airport, to sightseeing and getting acclimated to the Brazilian culture, God has blessed, protected, and provided for my every need.

My flight down had no difficulties. I had two rather long layovers in Miami, FL and Manaus, Brazil. During the layover in Miami, I was able to enjoy the peace and quiet of a virtually empty airport. In Manaus, I met up with J and F and we toured the streets for the afternoon and evening.

The main attraction of the day in Manaus was an opera house built in the late 1800s according to the European styles of the day. One unique aspect of the opera house is that the majority of the materials and decor were imported from Europe. Even the wood floor in the ballroom, which was made of Brazilian wood, was shipped to Europe to be cut and polished and then shipped back Manaus and installed.

That evening we returned to the airport and boarded a plane for our base location  It is difficult to imagine that I have only been here a week. I have had the joy of interacting with my two nieces. They are such a delight to play with. I have also enjoyed walking around the city and peeking in the little shops that surround the streets.

I went to the market the other day with F. We pulled into the parking lot on a rainy morning. But no need to worry about getting wet. There was a guy with an umbrella whose job was to escort people to the covered area. We walked through the covered area and into the market. It was outdoors, but a high roof covered it to provide protection from the rain and shade from the sun. Row upon row of fresh fruits and vegetables greeted us as we made our way through the aisles. People bustled back and forth selling their wares and buying groceries for their families. I heard someone let out a sharp whistle behind me. I turned and stepped out of the way just in time as a man carrying a heavy sack on his shoulder trotted past. We navigated the rows quickly and successfully avoided being trampled by enthusiastic merchants. When we had found everything on our shopping list, we made our way back to the car and safely home.

On Sunday morning, we joined some friends for an outing to the zoo. In America, such actions might result in missing church. But not so in this city. Here, the church has services approximately every two hours on Sunday. Each time, the same message is given. This is so that more people are able to attend. If they gave different messages, people would stay all day and there wouldn't be enough room in the building. Even when the same message is given, there are some services that are packed to standing room only. Anyway, because of the multiple services, we were able to go with to the zoo in the cool of the morning and then attend church at the 5 o'clock service. Another benefit to going to church at that particular time was that another missionary was there who could translate the service into English for me. She sat nearby while a couple of other visitors and I were given sets of headphones. She quietly spoke into her microphone headset and we were able to hear her in our headphones. It was very convient and not disruptive to others in the service. It was so encouraging to see such a large body of believers. The joy that radiated on their faces as they united in giving praise to God was inspiring. Even in the short week I have been here, I have been impressed by the church's desire to not only win souls for Christ, but truly disciple the believers in the church. This is even more impressive when you realize how many thousands of people this discipleship includes.

On Saturday evening, I went with J and F to their cell group meeting. This is where a large part of the discipleship takes place. Basically it is a Bible study group that meets once a week. Each group has an average of 10 people in it, including a leader and assistant. Each person in the church is also a member of a cell group. What a thrill it is to know that each week, there are between five to six thousand of these groups that are meeting together with the purpose of glorifying God and drawing closer to Him.

The Bible study was held in Portuguese. F translated some of it for me and my limited Spanish vocabulary kicked into play and help me pick out a few words here and there. But even though I didn't understand all that was being said, it was evident that the Holy Spirit was with us and He knows no language barrier. I had an excellent time fellowshipping with the people there, and communing with God.

I am so glad God has brought me to this land. It is so exciting to see His hand at work both in my life and in the lives of those around me.

Another opportunity God has brought my way since I've been here a little tutoring. J and F's Portuguese tutor heard that I had heard that I had taught English in the past. She expressed interest in furthering her study in the English language and asked if I would be willing to help her while I'm here. In exchange, she is tutoring me in Portuguese. I am so thankful to God for the chance to teach English again as well as the opportunity to study Portuguese. I am looking forward to seeing what else He brings my way.

The Crown Prince of the Ages

Long ago, as tiny Infant,
Came to earth our blessed Lord;
Poor, and laid within a manger,
By the shepherds first adored.
While on Earth He healed the suff'rer,
Showed the meek the path to heav'n,
Then on Calv'ry gave His life blood
That our sins might be forgiv'n.
And we love our blessed Saviour;
Soon to earth He'll come to reign,
For He's gone to heav'n before us;
But He said, "I'll come again."

See! The eastern dawn is breaking;
Earthly night will soon be o'er.
There are signs now of His coming,
He is almost at the door-
Not a humble Jewish infant
To be spurned and thrust aside,
But the King, the Crown Prince glorious,
To receive a glorious bride.
He is coming, surely, coming;
Those who for His presence yearn,
Robed and ready to receive Him,
Thus shall hasten His return.

Now with hope, the Gospel heeding,
Let us watch and ever be
Ready for the Bridegroom's coming,
When with joy His face we'll see.
Christmas angels, spread the message
That the meek and lowly One,
Now the Crown Prince of the Ages,
Comes in clouds to take us home.
We are watching, waiting, longing,
Struggling from earth's fetters free;
Come, Lord Jesus! Oh, come quickly:
Here are hearts that long for Thee.

The Joys of Teaching English

At the English camp I am currently working at, I am teaching a class of six boys. Our team name is The Wise Dragons. Why there are just six students in my class, and they are all boys is another story for another time.

Anyway, I gave them an assignment today and thought I would share the results.

The Assignment: Write a story about a wise dragon. (the idea was that we might be able to present the story as a skit for the rest of the camp.)

I had them work in pairs and this is what they came up with. (Other than some punctuation, I have left them unedited.)

Story #1

Wise Dragon is killer. People is scard. Wise, wise dragon like people meet. One day, wise dragon fight a people. People's die. wise dragon eat a people meat. Wise dragon die because wise dragon ate a knife. today people ate yummy dragon's meat.

Story #2

Wise dragon is live in sky. He is very big and long and very scared. One man go to the sky and visit a wise dragon house and fight a dragon. the winner is a man! Dragon is a pie and man a hero. The End

Story #3

Long long ago one dragon lived in Korea. He is very smart and very wise. So many peoples say "That is wise dragon." many people like him. Wise dragon is very happy and he want to help another peoples. One day one man visit the wise dragon.

A man said, "Wise dragon, I have a question. What is this pencil?" Wise dragon said, "This pencil is blue and white pencil." "Oh! Thank you wise dragon," said a man.

Many people loved wise dragon, but one knight don't like wise dragon. He want to kill him. the knight visit bad dragon. he said, "Hi Bad Dragon, I want to kill wise dragon. Can you help me?"

Bad dragon don't like wise dragon too. And he want to kill teh wise dragon too so he says "Sure, I help you." The knight and bad dragons go to teh wise dragon's cave. And knight say, "Wise dragon, your a very bad and I don't like you. I kill you." Knight and bad dragon attack to wise dragons. They are fight.

But wise dragon win, because wise dragon is very smart and very strong. The bad dragon died. But knight is sfe. He say, "I'm so sorry." Wise dragon forgiveness him and healing the knight. Wise dragon fly to the sky. He is smiling. The end.

Haha. You only thought I was going to post something new...

(Well, I guess you could technically call this something "new.")

I wasn't really going to post anything much. Just letting every one know that I am still alive. Bible school has been going well. I am going on Thanksgiving break tomorrow. I will be spending it with Mary and her family. I am planning on having a good time.

Yeah, so I guess that is all I've got to say at this point. Just be glad I said anything at all. I could have let another month or two go by without posting. >:}

Recalled to Life

Most people would start out by saying how they know that they haven't posted in such a long time, and how they are going to try to do better in the future.

I, however, shall do neither. First, because I already know that you know that I haven't posted in a long time...and if you have still been checking my blog all this time for updates, I commend you for your faithfulness.

Secondly, because there are absolutely no promises of "doing better" in the future. I will be returning to Bible school in September and definitely do not want any pressure of keeping this up. So you can pretty much count on not having a lot to read here.

At this time, you may be asking yourself what is the reason for posting now?

Let me explain.

Several days ago, I allowed my sister to experiment with the template of my blog. She is quite the interior decorator of the family and feels that that skill should express itself in all areas including the web. After several hours of html, pictures, and a great deal of silliness between the two of us, she finally arrived at this. I don't know if this will be the final product or not, but it is definitely more interesting than what I had before. So, for the present, it will stay.

So, I guess you could say that my main excuse for posting now is just a small way of saying thank you to her for fixing everything up.

Ok, enough with all that....the main purpose of this blog is to keep everybody updated with what I have been doing. However, I know how much people despise posts that go on forever. Therefore, this is going to be my summer in a nutshell....if at all possible.

This summer, I have been mostly staying at home. After finishing my first year at Bible school, I came home and spent some much needed quality time with my family. Since I have been gone so much over the last couple years, I feel that the time has been wisely spent.

I went to Nashville with them for the ATI conference. While there, I volunteered in the Pre-EXCEL program. I absolutely adored each of the 15 girls that I had on my team and was able to practice trusting God as he helped me keep control of so many girls in such a small space.

Several weeks later, I went back to NH in order to work off my summer work time. Bible school students are required to do 4 weeks of work during the summers of their 1st and 2nd years. That would be a total of 8 weeks. It is one of their ways of keeping the tuition minimal. I had already done one week of work. So I only had three weeks left. I worked two of them, and my parents came up and worked the other. I feel so blessed to have such self-sacrificing parents as they. Lest you may assume that those weeks were all work and no play, be not deceived. I had a marvelous time and would love to spend my time so profitably next year.

I came home and have been spending the rest of my time organizing books at Aunt Bertha's and working on projects around the house for Mother.

Some of you may have heard that my Great-Great Aunt Bertha died at the age of 104 on January 1st of this year. Well, she had a beautiful home that was built in the late 1800s and added onto in 1917. She lived there the majority of her life. She never married and was an English teacher for 43 years. When she died, she left everything to be divided up between the 13 heirs. My grandma was put in charge and hired me to work on arranging the books into categories so that they could be browsed more easily. Because Aunt Bertha was both an English teacher and a Turner, she had a great love for reading and books. Therefore, this job has kept me well occupied.

Well, my post is quite long enough for now. Tootles!
:-)
